CELEBRATE ALL SOUL’S EVE HAITIAN CULTURAL EVENT

The Haitian American community in Southern California is small but their voices can be loud and powerful. Filmmaker Rae Shaw aims to honor and highlight the presence of Haitian Americans in the Los Angeles area community through this event, a Haitian cultural festival which is also a fundraiser for her film The Repass. The Repass is a film that tells the story of how a young girl uses Haitian vodou to heal her family from a tragedy in Hurricane Katrina.

The event will feature presentations by local professors including Robin Derby of UCLA, dance performances choreographed by Katherine Dunham technique expert Anindo Marshall, a drumming performance by musician Rony Ambroise and a live scene performance by actress Marie Francoise Theodore whose ancestor was once a president of Haiti.

The film, The Repass is a feature film project that is currently fundraising on the nonprofit campaign platform, Razoo. The Repass was described as a “Haitian fairy tale” by the Indiewire blog Shadow & Act and Rae Shaw and Marie Francoise Theodore were featured in the article.  The Repass has been a long time in development for writer-director Rae Shaw who is also of Caribbean American descent. With the funds raised from this event, the filmmakers will shoot the first scenes for a trailer scheduled to shoot before the end of the year.

The event will take place at a central touchstone of the Haitian community, Tigeorge’s Kafe located in Echo Park at 307 Glendale Blvd. on Friday November 1. All Saints Day and All Souls Day are sacred holidays within the Haitian community: they are days to honor the dead and balance out the darkness of Halloween. The event begins at 7PM and tickets are $20 recommended donation. The restaurant will also be open to serve dinner from a regular menu. Tickets are available at eventbrite and at the door.
